From Whiplr to Real Life – Part I

Meet in a public place (Illustration)Meeting people on Whiplr is just like meeting people in a bar. Generally, it just pays to know what you’re getting into. That’s why we gathered a few things that you should consider when having fun on Whiplr.

Connect using Whiplr

Whiplr offers you a way to verify the identity of the person you want to play with or meet. Apart from the profile photo, you can send and receive more messages, have a chat, or talk using voice or video chat. Ask for references from their previous play partners. This makes it easier for you to trust the other side or at least establish some kind of first contact.

Personal information is personal information

When chatting with someone, share only the information you feel comfortable with. Whiplr also allows you to delete messages on both sides of the conversation if you want to extract information you sent, like photos.

Keep it public at first

Meeting someone for the first time can be intimidating or exciting, but it shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable. Meet in a public place for a nightcap or some coffee. Use Whiplr to meet them at a munch or, if you’re feeling confident enough, a play party. Watch them first, see what they’re like. You don’t have to jump in immediately.

Communicate better

When you talk to someone and plan to scene together, discuss your boundaries. Talk about your level of experience and don’t be afraid to mention it and make sure your play partner understands that. Discuss your D/s relationship to details. BDSM is all about safety, sanity and consent, and discussing those issues beforehand can untangle the situation. Negotiate, make a checklist of what’s right and what’s not, and make sure both parties are aware. All of these questions are also great icebreakers, try them out and tell us what works for you.

Why not have a safety net? If you’re going out, tell a friend where you’re going. Make sure that you know where you are and that you have a way to get home. That first meeting might not be the time to test your limits with alcohol or any intoxicating substance.

Trust your instincts

Instincts are meant to help us avoid anything that we don’t want to experience and we shouldn’t ignore them. If you’re chatting someone up or meeting them, even in public, and you feel uncomfortable for any reason, you can just politely disengage. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in this situation.

When inside Whiplr, if you feel a user is behaving inappropriately, you can report them by clicking the flag icon at the bottom of the profile screen or block them altogether, and most importantly, have fun in a safe, sane and consensual manner.
